Understand the 12 axes

Morality: Progressive / Traditionalist

Should social norms emphasize change or continuity?

What this axis explores

Progressive positions welcome social change, revised norms and wider personal choices. Traditionalist positions give more authority to inherited customs, established moral frameworks and continuity. These labels describe a broad tension rather than a complete moral philosophy.

How the questions explore the axis

Statements examine social expectations, changing customs, family arrangements and personal conduct. Responses distinguish willingness to revise established norms from a preference to retain them across different situations.

The result is independent of religious affiliation and economic policy. A progressive moral profile need not share the same economy or governance preferences as another progressive profile. When reviewing an answer, ask whether a custom matters because it is inherited or because you believe its consequences remain desirable. Supporting continuity in one area and change in another can produce a mixed score without requiring a single uniform rule for every social question.
