Understand the 12 axes

Control: Planning / Free market

How should economic activity be coordinated?

What this axis explores

Planning emphasizes regulation, public coordination and active economic policy. Free market emphasizes decentralized competition, voluntary exchange and limited intervention. This axis asks how economic decisions are organized, rather than simply who owns a business.

How the questions explore the axis

The pool tests attitudes to price controls, industrial policy, regulation, competition, monetary institutions and the freedom of businesses to make decisions. The scoring treats each answer as evidence about the preferred degree of public direction.

An answer about market rules should not be read as a complete view of welfare or property. The three economic axes are reported separately so that such combinations remain visible. Consider which decisions should be made by firms, consumers, central banks or public agencies. You may favor competition in one sector and coordinated provision in another. Reviewing those exceptions helps explain why a profile can fall between the most strongly stated poles.
